The aim of the Government’s welfare reform is a national employment rate of 80% for the working age population. This strategy will tackle localised pockets of worklessness, poverty, low skills and poor health. A significant proportion of people on benefits live in areas which display these characteristics, therefore reducing deprivation and social exclusion within them is key to the achievement of national employment targets.
City Strategy invites the key stakeholders from the public, private and voluntary sectors to come together into a concerted local programme – a ‘consortium’ – to improve the way support for individual jobless people is co-ordinated and delivered on the ground. This is about agencies coming together with the ability and willingness to use the resources at their disposal flexibly, in ways that reflect local needs, support the consortium’s overall plan, and combine effectively with the money being spent by partner agencies.
This activity is overseen by the employer led Enterprising Doncaster Board, a sub-group of the Local Strategic Partnership – Discover the Spirit Board.
A Doncaster City Strategy Implementation Plan has been produced. The plan provides an excellent opportunity to develop a coherent approach to employment and skills activities in Doncaster – an area that has been historically fragmented and disparate. The plan articulates an agreed direction of travel regarding the nature, focus and scale of employment and skills related activity.
The Council works with a range of partners to deliver City Strategy. These include:
